Jeffrey Gibson activated a series of public art installations across New York City to coincide with Climate Week NYC and the 2024 Creative Time Summit 2024, prompting discussions with the public about land, climate justice, and the complex relationship between humans and nature.

At the crux of this immersive art experience was Gibson’s moving image animation, “The Spirits Are Laughing” (2024), an eleven-minute animation that draws from the artist’s Choctaw and Cherokee heritage, and weaves together Indigenous kinship perspectives and environmental consciousness. The project was featured on billboards, digital signage, guerrilla projections across iconic landmarks in New York City and Brooklyn, and in IKE Smart City Kiosks in 9 cities across the U.S.

Shore Art Advisory produced "The Spirits are Laughing" in partnership with the Emerson Collective.
